Tea Towels and what do they have to do with Quilting?
Share
Growing up, my Mum had this charming habit of using tea towels for just about everything. She'd wrap bridal shower gifts in a fresh tea towel, set them out as hot pads on the table, and even lay them on the coffee table for protection. Those humble tea towels had a multitude of uses! Isn't it funny how many of us, who might've been a tad embarrassed by our mothers back then, have now found ourselves following in their footsteps? I've taken up the tradition; I use tea towels to wrap presents, dry veggies, and yes, I even use them for decoration!
A few years ago, when I was volunteering at a thrift store, we received a generous donation of nearly 50 different linen tea towels. It was quite a sight to behold! Someone had taken the time to collect one tea towel from each place they'd visited. I found towels from Edinburgh, Athens, London, and more, each with its own unique story. In the end, I ended up buying ten of them, and I continue to use them every day. When I travel for work, I make it a point to purchase a tea towel from the city I'm in and bring it home as a unique souvenir. These days, I often give them as gifts instead of hoarding them, but it's a lovely way to bring a piece of the world back with you.
Tea towels have an endearing charm, and they've become an integral part of my creative journey. When I embarked on the Gingiber Surface Pattern Tea Towel course, it just felt like the perfect direction for my company. You see, I now feature my original quilt patterns printed on these bright and colorful tea towels!
Tea towels are much more than just pieces of fabric; they're like the unsung heroes of your kitchen tools! These little wonders have a wide range of uses, from drying dishes to wrapping your hand after a little kitchen mishap, and even cleaning up those occasional coffee spills.
In my latest blog post, we'll delve into the world of tea towels, explore their fascinating history, discover their versatility, and even get a little creative with how you can incorporate them into your home. So, let's dive right in!
To begin, tea towels, dish towels, and kitchen towels are often used interchangeably, but they do have their subtle differences. Let me tell you about the distinctions, their unique materials, sizes, and styles. Having both types on hand can add spice and charm to your kitchen tasks.
Tea towels have been around for centuries, evolving from a decorative way to keep teapots warm to versatile kitchen tools. Nowadays, they come in a variety of materials and styles, adding both functionality and a touch of personality to your kitchen.
And now, let's talk about the diverse roles these tea towels can play in your home. Besides their traditional use in the kitchen, they've got quite a few tricks up their sleeves. They're perfect for drying dishes, wiping your hands, covering food, wrapping bread, and even cleaning up those inevitable spills. But, it doesn't end there; tea towels can also be used as decorative accents, as hot pads, and even as stylish napkins at dinner parties. Not to forget their traditional role in polishing utensils, they can be environmentally friendly too.
But, what's more, you can get creative with tea towels beyond the kitchen. Use them to wrap gifts, create a vibrant table runner, make a charming wall hanging, sew a tote bag, and even fashion a unique cushion cover. The possibilities are endless!
So, next time you're in the kitchen, don't forget to reach for your trusty tea towel. With its countless uses and undeniable charm, it's a versatile and practical addition to your kitchen arsenal.
